The Background: Our team, Family Care Uganda has been a registered NGO in Uganda since 1999. Over the years, we have focused on a broad range of means of caring for the needy and ministering the Gospel, ranging from collecting and distributing literally tons of donations, getting them to needy orphanages, HIV+ widow-empowerment teams,  little known outposts and the refugee camps for Internally Displaced Persons, while we would minister each time we visited.  We have distributed the STEPS Character Building Curriculum to centers where former child soldiers were being re-trained, teaching the counselors how to best use these amazing materials to the full. Then during times of disaster, traveled with 10 ton trucks of relief during floods, or to marginalized and drought ridden Karamoja etc. However the past year or so has led us to step back and re-evaluate our long-term effectiveness. Our passionate desire is to have as much impact in this extremely needy country as possible.

Given the magnitude of the challenge that faces us, being the second youngest country in the world, with 58% of our population 15 years old and younger, we stepped back to see how we could develop a program that would have a more long-term impact. We have been very concerned that whatever we begin, must become completely self-sustaining & that once it receives a ‘kick start’ will be moving towards the goal of becoming completely self-sufficient.

We purchased a 2 acre plot of land, due to a generous grant we received from the Family Care Foundation in the US. This land is where we are planning to build a school to teach and train not only the children who have suffered so much, but the teachers who lack even basic training & skills available in developed countries.

In the meantime, 160 orphans have been receiving teaching and training in a temporary building and they are progressing well.

Our team is multinational: Rajan — Indian.  Malaika — Nigerian.  Sean — Japanese/Brazilian.  Robin — Australian.

During this time we have been able to work on a wide variety of projects.
